Before Formula One became complicated… it sounded like this


Modern Formula One engines are astonishing things.


They’re efficient. Intelligent. Technically remarkable.


They’re also about as emotionally engaging as a high-end dishwasher.


Because THIS… this was Formula One at its absolute peak.


The Cosworth DFV wasn’t just an engine. It was motorsport’s version of the small block Chevy. A brutal, screaming, unapologetically British masterpiece that completely rewrote what racing engines could be.


Before the DFV arrived in 1967, Formula One was largely dominated by manufacturers with enormous budgets and factory-backed engineering departments. Then Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin turned up with a lightweight 3.0-litre V8 that was so clever, so compact, and so devastatingly effective that it effectively democratised Formula One overnight.


And then it proceeded to annihilate the competition for the next decade and a half.


155 Grand Prix victories.


12 Constructors’ Championships.


10 Drivers’ Championships.


One engine.


And the extraordinary thing is that it wasn’t complicated by modern standards. No hybrid systems. No batteries. No endless software maps and radio messages asking drivers to “lift and coast.”


Just:

fuel

airnoise

violence

engineering genius.


It revved beyond 10,000rpm in an era when reliability was often considered more of a polite suggestion than an expectation. It powered legends. Lotus. McLaren. Tyrrell. Williams. It carried some of the greatest drivers in history toward immortality while sounding like the gates of hell opening at full throttle.


And visually? Look at it.


Even sitting still, the thing looks dangerous.


Eight intake trumpets standing upright like organ pipes in a cathedral dedicated entirely to speed. Every pipe, bolt, and linkage visible. No plastic covers. No pretending. No unnecessary styling. Just raw mechanical honesty.


That’s why enthusiasts still obsess over the DFV today.


Because it represents something we’ve almost lost:an age where engineering wasn’t filtered through accountants, emissions legislation, marketing departments, and risk assessments.


It was built for one purpose only:to go faster than absolutely everything else.


And for a very long time…


it did.
